How to increase the amount of breast milk?

26 Jan How to increase the amount of breast milk?

Looking for some tips to produce more breast milk?

You have to take many things into consideration before you think that your milk flow is low or not enough and the feel of your breast, your baby’s behaviour, the amount you breastfeed or express are not valid ways to determine if your milk flow is low or not enough.

Talk to your doctor or lactation consultant and if you are still not producing enough of a milk flow then the following can help.

First and foremost the easiest way to produce more breast milk is by breastfeeding and pumping more, as the more you demand the more your body will produce.
In the morning the first feed usually gives the most milk so we suggest that you pump as well as feeding at this time.

Express pumps

Electric pumps are more effect than battery or hand pumps and another great way is to take a warm shower before you express as this will help.
We would suggest pumping at least for 10-15 minutes. Do this even if you are not getting any milk as you are telling your body it needs to produce more.
There is also a capsule you can get from any health food store called fenugreek.

Fenugreek capsules

Take  2-3 Fenugreek  , 3 times a day for the first 7-10 days; the reduce to taking  2 , 3 times a day for the next 10 days reduce even further by only taking to 1 capsule, 3 times a day for another 7-10 days. Mothers usually see an increase in breast milk within 72 hours.
Common side effects of Fenugreek

The most common side effects reported are sweating and excretions that smell like maple syrup. Please note Fenugreek is not recommended for women with diabetes (it may lower blood sugar) or asthma (it may aggravate symptoms). We always recommend Speaking with a lactation consultant and your Doctor before using fenugreek.

Finally it is very important for you to take care of yourself. If you are very stressed attempts to up a full milk supply will be futile. Any kind of help, whether it’s physical, psychological or even domestic will help the process of relactation. With this in mind you are on your way to a stronger supply yet again.
Also if there is a local breastfeeding support group local to you this free help and advice can be priceless just not for you but also for your new baby.
